Lipoproteins can be divided into several categories

Lipoproteins are essential carriers that transport fats, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, through the bloodstream. These particles are formed when lipids bind to specific proteins, creating complexes known as lipoproteins. There are several types of lipoproteins, each with unique functions in lipid metabolism. Understanding lipoprotein levels helps assess not only the quantity of fats in the blood but also their biological roles and potential impact on health. Lipoproteins can be classified based on density or electrophoretic mobility. By ultracentrifugation, they are divided into chylomicrons, very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Electrophoresis further categorizes them into chylomicron remnants, pre-beta, beta, and alpha lipoproteins. Chylomicrons are the largest lipoproteins and primarily carry dietary fats from the intestines to other parts of the body. After a 12-hour fast, chylomicrons should no longer be present in the blood. HDL, often called "good cholesterol," has the highest density and is rich in phospholipids. It plays a key role in reverse cholesterol transport, carrying excess cholesterol from tissues back to the liver for excretion. This process helps prevent the buildup of cholesterol in arteries, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis. HDL is mainly produced by the liver and small intestine. The protein ApoAI makes up about 75% of its composition, while ApoAII accounts for around 20%. HDL undergoes maturation through interactions with enzymes like LCAT, which esterifies free cholesterol, transforming disc-shaped HDL into spherical forms. This process supports the efficient removal of cholesterol from peripheral cells. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL), on the other hand, are known as "bad cholesterol" because they transport cholesterol to tissues, where it can accumulate and contribute to plaque formation in arteries. Elevated LDL levels are strongly associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis. The reference range for LDL is typically below 3.12 mmol/L. Alpha-lipoproteins, another category, include HDL and are associated with protective effects against heart disease. Their levels can vary, and a normal range is usually between 0 and 300 mg/dL. Understanding these lipoprotein classes is crucial for evaluating cardiovascular health and guiding treatment strategies. Each type plays a distinct role in maintaining lipid balance and overall metabolic function.
