Economic income plays a central role in determining the level of sports consumption among individuals. According to statistical data, the limited sports spending among industrial workers, farmers, and the unemployed is largely due to their low income levels. Based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, people can only pursue higher-level needs—such as social belonging, respect, and self-actualization—after their basic physiological and safety needs (like food, water, personal security, and property ownership) are met. As socio-economic development continues, people’s quality of life improves, and their desire for higher material and mental satisfaction grows. In a society where economic conditions shape the superstructure, income becomes the foundation for meeting basic living needs. To engage in higher-level sports-related consumption, individuals must have sufficient financial resources. Thus, economic income serves as a solid base for residents to participate in sports product consumption.
When promoting the development of the sporting goods industry through widespread sports consumption, national income levels play a crucial role. Empirical studies show that national income has a stronger influence on the growth of the sporting goods sector than individual household income. Theoretical analysis also suggests that education and cultural awareness can influence sports consumption behavior from a spiritual perspective, while national income affects it from a material standpoint. Both factors are key elements shaping residents’ sports consumption habits. The academic community generally agrees with this view, confirming that residents' income is the primary factor influencing their sports consumption level, which aligns with this study’s findings.
Moreover, it is widely recognized that the economic base determines the superstructure. The level of a country's or region's socio-economic development directly influences the potential of related industries. Meanwhile, education helps individuals better contribute to economic progress. A strong economic foundation is essential for advancing all social sectors, including the sporting goods industry. Therefore, compared to cultural education, national income has a more significant impact in driving the development and expansion of the sporting goods manufacturing sector.
