Exporting American furniture, cheap and good consumers, praised by China

Two days ago, I bought a set of open-air dining tables and chairs in a local warehouse store, including 6 chairs, a table, a parasol and a umbrella stand. The furniture is made of metal, but it has an anti-collision coating, which guarantees no rust for many years. The full set adds up to $750 and is surprisingly cheap. Don't look at the little oval label: I know this is made in China.

The furniture is packed in two large boxes and needs to be “assembled by itself”. According to my years of experience in assembling American-made tools, bookshelves, outdoor cookers, children's toys and other equipment, this process will always cause me headaches. Because there are always the wrong length of the screw, the wrong hole, the wrong or missing explanation page and so on. One hour of work often takes an afternoon.

Therefore, I also spirited to prepare to deal with this set of Chinese products. The things in both boxes are beautifully packaged. The chair legs, back and armrests are wrapped in soft flannel. The instructions are large and each step is explained very clearly. The hardware is in a sealed plastic tray, and each nut and bolt has its own compartment. I know a few things, I know that there are quite a few parts. The wrench required for assembly also has a separate storage space.

After starting the assembly, I was amazed at the accuracy of the elbow, the uniform length and the rubber pad under the table and chair. Adjacent parts can be precisely matched and screws can be easily screwed into the holes. It took only an hour to assemble and put the full set of furniture in value, and it looks beautiful.

The final procedure is to attach the exposed black plastic cover to the exposed bolts: this will cover the shiny metal outer layer and prevent unsightly corrosion. I have no complaints anymore, and some are just gratitude, satisfaction and appreciation. This manufacturer is obviously dedicated to the consumer, and has made great efforts in packaging, tools, precision and ease of assembly.

At the same time, my heart began to have faint concerns: these guys are great! Design, manufacturing, precision, quality and price are impeccable. What if they start exporting cars and trucks after the domestic production level has increased dramatically? Remember how we laughed at the "Made in Japan" label after World War II?

Moreover, as if to emphasize the decline of "the greatest, richest, most powerful country God created on this planet", I assembled this piece of furniture that day at the Car Grand Prix on Bell Island. The game had to be interrupted for two hours because the road surface suddenly burst and there was a huge pothole on the ground, and the filling inside flew into the air like a black shrapnel. Finally, after an emergency repair, the game was finally completed, although the time was shortened a lot.

I can't imagine which first-world industrial countries will hold big events on such a ruined asphalt road... but this is the increasingly depleted infrastructure of the United States. No one checks, no one is worried. As always, this is said to be "good enough." While we are laughing at other countries, we are in danger of going to the sun. It is time to give up pride and arrogance, and stop indulging in the collective self-satisfaction and self-worship.
