Ionic composition of rat corneal wound current and its regulation
The electric field and current inside the wound are a strong signal that can guide the cells to migrate into the healing wound. The electric field stimulates the distribution, migration, and differentiation of many cells, such as corneal epidermal cells, nerve cells, fibroblasts, and skin epidermal cells, and these cells have electrotropism or electrotropism. The electric field and current appearing on human skin wounds were detected many years ago, and now new technologies can more accurately measure changes in current, such as non-invasive micro-measurement technology, bioelectric imagers, etc.
In 2011, researchers at the University of California, Davis used non-invasive micro-measurement techniques to measure the dynamics of individual ion currents in rat corneal wounds over time, and also examined the expression levels of Cl-channels before and after injury. Ca2 + outflow increases after injury, but K + outflow is large at the beginning and then decreases rapidly. Surprisingly, the inflow of Na + in the wound and the continuous inflow of Cl- are similar to the wound current measured previously. Pharmacological experiments found that the drugs stimulated ion transport and significantly enhanced Cl-, Na + and K + flow rates. Damage to the cornea caused significant changes in the distribution and expression of Cl-channel CLC2.
This study shows that outward currents appear on corneal wounds, which are mainly caused by Cl-inflow and part of Ca2 + and K + outflow. Ca2 + and Cl- flow rates are mainly activated and regulated, but K + flow rate is mainly caused by leakage. Electrical signals are an activation response that can provide new methods for regulating wound healing, such as changing the ion transport through eye drops to help the challenge of non-healing corneal ulcers. Therefore, we can develop eye drops suitable for treating eye diseases.
