Spider webs have always been one of the most fascinating biological structures. Whether it's its ultra-high strength performance (which is stronger than steel at the same quality) or the complex mathematical patterns presented on the web, Spider Web is one of the most impressive natural creations. Today, by combining computer modeling with mechanical analysis, a research team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed a way to mimic spider webs using 3D printing techniques to better study them.
The research team recently published a paper in the journal Nature, claiming that they have found a way to optimize the structure of 3D printed synthetic spider webs for high intensity. The research team is headed by Professor Marku Buehler of the MIT Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). Other researchers include CEE research scientist Zhao Qin, Harvard University professor Jennifer Lewis and former Harvard postdoctoral Brett Compton.
This is the first systematic exploration of such structures in the world. Professor Buehler said. "We are looking to expand our understanding of the function of natural fabrics in a systematic and repeatable way. â€
Using an experimental setup, the team used metal structures to print synthetic webs in 3D and directly integrated their data into the model—the essence of the actual spider web structure combined with the computational model.
According to Harvard professor Jennifer Lewis, this 3D printing model offers more opportunities and possibilities for further study of the effects of mesh design and the relationship between strength and damage tolerance, if natural-generated spider webs are used. It is impossible to conduct such research at all.
