Rapid prototyping promotes continuous innovation in automotive technology

The Buick Avenir concept car (pictured) was designed and produced by the GM Australia team at the Port of Melbourne. The car is positioned as a large luxury car, and the headquarters of Quickparts, a 3D Systems company, produced the grille of this prototype, winning the 2015 “Best Concept Car” and “Best Creative Application of Colors, Graphics and Materials” for the GM team. A small but vital force was given.

3D Systems' Quickparts offer the world's leading rapid prototyping and 3D printing systems that produce digital files directly into functional prototypes and components.

Quickparts believes that the research and development of the winning model Avenir (meaning "future" in French) demonstrates the rapid turnover and breakthrough innovation manufacturing capabilities of the Australian team. The local automotive industry is undergoing tremendous changes. The Avenir case is a perfect combination of outstanding design skills and superb manufacturing capabilities, providing a value-for-money customized solution for the majority of car players.

Taking into account the design complexity of the car grille, Quickparts uses the latest generation of sPro60HD Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology to complete compact prototypes that are faster than traditional processes. The grille components of the Avenir project took three days to complete, while traditional CNC technology typically takes two weeks. Better quality control while significantly saving costs.

With the help of local experts at Quickparts, the Australian team was able to turn creative design into functional components for concept testing and review. Through this beta test, GM's Australian design team is able to apply SLS technology worldwide.

Quickparts said that Australian automakers are increasingly adopting 3D printing and additive manufacturing solutions to achieve innovation and gain a competitive edge. In particular, the prototype production of parts under the hood has developed rapidly in the local automotive industry as part of the automotive manufacturer's conceptual design.

The company believes that the demand for 3D printing in the automotive industry will continue to grow as major manufacturers have tasted the sweetness of rapid prototyping in the design and manufacturing stages.
