In recent days, a concerning incident has taken place involving a customer who experienced discomfort after changing their eyeglass frames. The public has been closely following this case, as the individual struggled with eye pain and visual discomfort after purchasing new glasses. After several attempts to resolve the issue, the problem was finally addressed with the help of the Consumer Association.
On February 28th, Mr. Xin visited an optical shop in the city to replace his old frames. After selecting a new pair, the staff did not perform any eye measurements or adjustments before reusing the original lenses in the new frame. He paid 300 yuan for the new frame and left with the glasses. However, on his way home, he began to feel eye strain and discomfort. At first, he thought it would pass, but upon returning home, his family noticed redness in his eyes. He immediately took off the glasses and conducted an online search, which revealed that proper pupillary distance is essential when fitting new frames.
Realizing that the optical shop had not measured his eye distance, Mr. Xin decided to return the glasses. On March 1st, he went back to the store, only to be refused a refund, as the staff claimed the frame itself had no quality issues.
The next day, the author accompanied Mr. Xin to a professional optical shop downtown. A certified optometrist examined the new frames and found that they did not match Mr. Xin’s pupillary distance. “Each pair of lenses has two optical centers,†the optician explained. “Your eyes have two pupils, and the distance between them should match the optical centers of the lenses. If there's a significant deviation, it can cause eye strain and discomfort.†The optometrist confirmed that Mr. Xin’s new frame exceeded the national standard for deviation, which likely caused his symptoms.
Despite this, the original optical shop denied responsibility, claiming that no measurements were required for frame changes. They insisted that other customers didn’t need such checks either.
After further discussion, Mr. Xin and the author approached the Huancheng District Consumer Association. After reviewing the case, the association facilitated a meeting with the shop’s manager. Eventually, the shop agreed to a refund, deducting a small service fee, and returned 250 yuan to Mr. Xin.
“I wouldn’t have gone through all this if I had known about the problems involved in changing frames,†Mr. Xin said with frustration.
