Introduction

Echinacea, commonly known as purple coneflower, is a hardy perennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It thrives in dry climates and has been widely used in traditional medicine. One of the key bioactive compounds found in Echinacea is cichoric acid, a phenylpropanoid derivative with potential health benefits. Recent studies indicate that over 50% of published research on cichoric acid focuses on its therapeutic applications, including treatment of upper respiratory infections, immune modulation, and even cancer support. However, the concentration of cichoric acid can vary significantly depending on factors such as geographic origin, growing conditions, and sample preparation methods.

To conduct further research effectively, it is often necessary to isolate large quantities of the target compound. This requires multiple injections of crude extracts, which can be time-consuming and inefficient without the right tools. In this application note, we demonstrate how the Prep 150 LC system, combined with ChromScope software, can efficiently separate and purify cichoric acid from Echinacea extracts. The methodology described here is also applicable to other compounds that exhibit UV absorbance, making it a versatile approach for natural product isolation.
