The GJB150.8A-2009 standard outlines the procedures for rain testing, which is designed to evaluate the performance of equipment that may be exposed to rain, water spray, or dripping during storage, transportation, or operation. If the equipment is installed in its operational configuration, this condition is typically considered more severe than other scenarios. The immersion test is used to determine whether water can penetrate the device. If the equipment has already passed the immersion test and its installation status remains unchanged, it is usually not required to undergo a rain test. However, there are limitations—such as pressure differences during immersion testing—that may not be captured by the rain test itself. In cases where the equipment is likely to be placed on surfaces with significant water accumulation, an immersion test might be more appropriate. In general, both tests should be conducted if they align with the equipment’s life profile and environmental exposure conditions. It's important to consider the specific application and environmental factors when deciding which test to use. The GJB150.8A-2009 standard does have certain limitations regarding the rain shower test. For instance, it does not include a formal rain test procedure. Additionally, it is not suitable for evaluating the adaptability of aircraft windshields or rain removal systems. It also cannot assess the performance of pressure flushing or purification devices. Moreover, the standard is insufficient for determining the effects of prolonged rainfall or for evaluating the impact of a small amount of condensation drip on the upper surface of the equipment (less than 140L/m²/h). These limitations highlight the importance of understanding the scope and applicability of the standard before conducting any testing.
