Migrating Neolithic men may have influenced prehistoric Europeans. An analysis of ancient DNA suggests that men migrate more than women in the New Age. Marie Lacan and colleagues extracted DNA from human specimens excavated from the cave of Avellaner, an ancient tomb cave in northeastern Spain. The authors analyzed the Y chromosome present in men and the mitochondrial DNA passed from mother to child. Of the 7 people found in the cave, 6 were found to be male and only 1 was female. Although no direct family relationship was found among these people, five of the men appeared to belong to the same paternal line, suggesting that only one group used this cave as a burial site. These findings further suggested the origin of the pre-Neolithic age of the matrilineal lineage during this period. The at least two haplotype groups G2a and E1b1b1a1b of these males are quite unique and rare among today's Western European populations, suggesting that these paternal lines were introduced into Europe from elsewhere. The authors therefore concluded that when the population of the Neolithic transition period changed from a hunter-gathering lifestyle to a culture based on agriculture, groups of men instead of women migrated. These results are in line with previous research on individuals from France in the late New Era period, and indicate the surprising genetic similarity between the two populations at that time.
