IFW develops 3D printed bone drills to reduce the damage of high temperature to human tissues

The Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) at the Leibniz University in Hannover, Germany, developed a new 3D printed bone-cutting drill. This bone-cutting drill has a cooling hole inside to prevent damage to human tissue caused by high temperature during surgery (typical bone operating temperature can reach 48 °C during surgery).

The new bone-cutting drill is manufactured by IFW through Toolcraft's powder bed selective laser-melting metal 3D printing equipment from Concept Laser. The size of the osteotomy bit is the same as that of a conventional bone drill, but the difference is that it contains a very fine cooling channel (1.2 mm in diameter) inside the 3D printing bit. During the use of the bone drill, the coolant is circulated inside the drill bit under the drive of the external device, thereby carrying the heat generated when the bone is drilled.

Currently, IFW has tested this 3D printed bone drill with water as a coolant, demonstrating a temperature drop of up to 70%.

Due to the complex shape and small size of the cold passage inside the drill bit, this structure cannot be realized by conventional machining processes. The manufacture of such an internal cooling passage by a metal 3D printing process brings more space for the design optimization of the internal cooling structure of the bone drill.

According to 3D Science Valley's market research, metal 3D printing technology based on powder bed selective laser melting has been commercialized in the field of machining tool manufacturing. These tools also have complex internal cooling channels, in which metal 3D printing technology is used. The value is similar to bone diamond manufacturing. Concept Laser's metal 3D printing equipment has been used by the German machine tool company Marpa to manufacture QTD series tools with complex spiral cooling channels to increase the heat transfer capacity of the coolant to the top of the drill bit. Marpa's drills last longer and run faster than previous drills.
