Packaging Doctor

Hello again, and welcome back to the Packaging Doctor’s office! It’s great to have you here as we dive into another intriguing packaging challenge. We’ve been pretty busy at Kite HQ lately—celebrating our 13th birthday, which is pretty impressive for a packaging company. We had a lovely day on the Thames with some cake, balloons, and of course, plenty of bubble wrap just in case someone got too excited and fell in!

It's amazing how quickly time flies, and it's even more exciting to see so many of our original team members still with us. Their combined experience makes us one of the most knowledgeable packaging teams around.

Now, before I jump into today’s case, I just want to say that I truly love what I do. Packaging isn’t just a job for me—it’s a passion. And I enjoy helping people solve problems, especially when it comes to protecting things that matter. Whether it's fragile electronics or delicate wildlife, every project is unique and rewarding.

Today’s case was particularly interesting. I don’t get too many requests involving animals, but when I do, it always feels like a real privilege. Working with creatures like flamingos, penguins, and owls must be an incredible experience. If you're a fan of David Attenborough, you’ll know exactly what I mean—there’s something truly special about looking after wildlife.

Dear Packaging Doctor,

I’m the Lead Bird Keeper at a local zoo, and I look after a wide variety of birds, including penguins, parrots, owls, and of course, the beautiful and exotic flamingos. We’re about to move the flamingos to a new section of the zoo that’s been under construction for a while. It’s a few miles away from their current home, so I need a temporary solution to transport them safely.

We have 100 flamingos to move, so walking them across the park isn't an option. The main issue is their height—they’re over 1 meter tall, and I can’t find any boxes that fit. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks and best wishes, Marianna

Hi Marianna,

Wow, “Find a box for 100 flamingos” is definitely not a typical request—but it sounds like your job is anything but routine! I can only imagine how fascinating it must be to work with such unique and beautiful creatures.

I completely understand your frustration. There’s no standard ‘flamingo box’ on the market, so the next best thing is a Wardrobe Carton. These are commonly used in the fashion and moving industries to transport clothes on rails, and they come in a height of 122 cm—perfect for your flamingos!

You won’t need the plastic rod inside, so feel free to remove that. The cardboard is double-walled and strong enough to protect the birds during transit. To make sure the boxes stay closed, I’d recommend using masking tape—it’s eco-friendly and works well for securing packages without damaging the material.

I hope the flamingos settle into their new home comfortably. It sounds like a big but exciting project!

Best Wishes,

The Packaging Doctor
