It's Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day!

If you've ever found yourself mindlessly popping bubbles just for the fun of it, today is your day. It’s Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day, a celebration of that iconic packaging material that brings joy to millions.

Observed on the last Monday of every January, this quirky holiday honors the invention of bubble wrap by engineers Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes in 1957. Their original idea was to create textured wallpaper by sealing two shower curtains together with air bubbles in between. But when that didn’t take off, they rebranded their product as greenhouse insulation. It wasn’t until 1961 that the true value of bubble wrap was realized — as a protective packaging material. And from there, the rest is history.

Today, over 240,000 miles of bubble wrap are produced in the UK alone each year — that’s more than the distance from Earth to the Moon!

But what happens to all that bubble wrap after it’s used? Unfortunately, most ends up in landfills. While it’s a common myth that bubble wrap can’t be recycled, the truth is it can’t be tossed into your regular recycling bin at home. Instead, it needs to be taken to special collection points found at major supermarkets like Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, and many others.

Bubble wrap isn’t just for packing though — it has so many creative and practical uses before it even gets to the recycling stage. Here are some of my favorite ways to reuse it:

Create Art

Turn bubble wrap into an art tool! Cut out shapes and press them onto paper with paint. The result is a unique, textured design perfect for kids or anyone looking for a fun craft project. It’s affordable, easy, and full of creative potential.

Keep Your Food Cold (and Warm)

Line your lunch containers or food bags with bubble wrap to keep meals at the right temperature. Whether you're heading to work or having a picnic, it's a great way to maintain the freshness of your food without using plastic wrap.

Insulate Windows

Bubble wrap is an excellent insulator thanks to the air pockets trapped inside. Many greenhouses still use it to prevent heat loss during the winter. You can do the same for your home windows to keep things cozy during colder months.

Protect Your Plants

Wrap outdoor plants with bubble wrap to protect them from frost. It might seem strange, but this simple trick can save your garden from harsh winter weather.

Prevent Car Frost

Place a sheet of bubble wrap over your car windshield overnight, held in place by your wipers. In the morning, you’ll have a frost-free windscreen and no need to scrape ice off your car — a real time-saver.

Stress Relief

Last but definitely not least, bubble wrap is one of the best stress relievers around. Popping those bubbles is not only satisfying but also incredibly calming. It’s a small, inexpensive way to unwind and de-stress.

So whether you’re using it for a creative project, protecting your plants, or just enjoying the sound of popping bubbles, today is a great day to appreciate this humble yet fascinating material.

If you're in the market for bubble wrap, make sure to check out local stores or online suppliers. Who knows — maybe you'll find a new way to use it that even the inventors never thought of!
