Researchers at the University of Minnesota have reported that mouse models show that natural plant products with a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine-triptolide are effective in treating pancreatic cancer.
Previous studies have shown that pancreatic cancer cells may contain too much HSP70 protein, which can protect cancer cells from death. Researchers at the University of Minnesota have found that triptolide can reduce the concentration of HSP70 in pancreatic cancer cells, which in turn reduces tumor cells in mice.
However, because triptolide is insoluble in water, its effect in mice is not ideal. The researchers then processed tripterygium wilfordii to obtain a new water-soluble, injectable new drug, minnesol, which can be transported to pancreatic cancer cells more efficiently.
The researchers tested the new drug in pancreatic cancer cell lines and mice transplanted with human pancreatic tumors. They found that the drug has an excellent effect on killing tumor cells and shrinking tumors.
Research leader and professor of the University of Minnesota School of Medicine Ashok Salou said that there is currently no good way to treat pancreatic cancer. The median survival time of patients after diagnosis is only 6 months.
