"The clock that allows all seats to be read clearly" - the directive issued by Augustus of Saxony to the watch of his new imperial opera house. One hundred and fifty years ago this command from the royal family derived a watch that was unmanned in all aspects: the five-minute digital clock at Semper's Opera House. This revolutionary design is based on the hands of the genius mentor, Godo Christian Friedrich Gutkaes, of Dresden clockmaker Fernando Adolf Lange A. Range & Sohne. Together, they designed the world's first digital clock.
This idea is born on demand. The space above the front stage is fairly limited, and the circular clock dial does not provide enough readability in the light theater. They decided to use two opposite-running drums to design a unique gear. Hanging above the stage, hours and minutes are displayed in gorgeous retouched double-vision windows, which are displayed at five-minute intervals.
