The reporter learned from Jiangsu Wujiang Inspection and Quarantine Bureau that the restrictions on formamide in the EU Toy Safety Directive will be implemented on May 24 this year. The content of formamide in foam toy materials should not exceed 200mg/kg, otherwise a 28-day release is required. The amount is tested and the amount of formamide released must not exceed 20 μg/m3.
The restriction is based on the amendment (EU) 2015/2115 of the Commission's Toy Safety Directive issued by the European Commission in the Official Journal of the European Union on November 25, 2015. There are four other restricted substances CMI and the EU Toy Safety Directive. Mixture of MI 3:1, methylisothiazolinone (CMI), isothiazolinone (MI), and 1,2-benzisothiazol-3-one (BIT). The limitation requirements for 1,2-benzisothiazol-3-one (BIT) will also be implemented on May 24, and the BIT content of water-based toy materials should not exceed 5 mg/kg, and the test method is EN 71- 10:2005 or EN 71-11:2005.
According to a toy expert from the Supervision and Control Section of the Jiangsu Wujiang Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, formamide is a solvent that is often used as a reducing agent and industrial chemicals. The addition of formamide to the foamed plastic product can foam the plastic, reduce the production cost, and increase the flexibility of the plastic product. However, formamide is slightly irritating to the skin and can cause allergies. Its vapor or mist has a stimulating effect on the eyes, mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. Therefore, the content of formamide in toy products must not exceed the standard.
