According to the regulations concerning the recycling and use of containers and packaging in Japan, in the fiscal year 2002, Nippon Steel Corporation recycled and used 120,000 tons of municipal waste plastics.
According to reports, Nippon Steel Corporation has built an efficient recycling system for collecting and processing municipal waste plastics at the Kimi Plant and the Nagoya Plant. The amount of waste plastics handled by the company accounts for approximately 40% of the total amount of waste plastics in Japan. Nippon Steel has developed a recycling technology that uses municipal waste plastics as raw materials for coke ovens. The recovery efficiency of the existing systems is estimated to be about 90%, which is higher than other waste plastic chemical recycling systems.
As part of its efforts to increase operating capacity, Nippon Steel has developed a recycling system for waste plastics including pretreatment and thermal decomposition. The processing capacity of the pretreatment equipment is 4.2 tons/hour. The processing program is to manually remove the waste plastics from the packing and remove the impurities, and then crush into 100mm blocks, remove the metal by magnetic separation, shake separation glass and gravel. After being crushed and gravity-removed to remove polyvinyl chloride plastic, it is crushed to about 20 mm and compressed into pellets. Thermal decomposition takes place in a coke oven and waste plastics are decomposed at 1200°C into hydrocarbon oil (40%), coke oven gas (40%) and coke (20%). Hydrocarbon oil, coke oven gas, and coke are used as chemical raw materials, power plant fuels, and reducing agents for blast furnace ironmaking.
