Get the best film output

Want to get better output from the output center? The following will list what you can do to ensure the best output.

Skip Griswold, the owner of Advanced Computer Imaging in Atlanta, has seen anything from the development of TrueType to the growth of web pages during his nine years of service in the output service center. But some things haven't changed: the files the guests brought to Griswold are missing fonts, images with wrong resolution, and page settings in the wrong order.

Most errors like this will happen in the output center, with the wrong font in the page, or the image disappears, or the file cannot be printed at all. But designers and their customers still have to pay in the end, although it will waste time and money.

In the digital process, designers must undertake the work done by color separation personnel in the past. Or they must at least understand these things to prevent the creation of documents that will cause problems in the next production process. If you know what to watch closely, it will be easier to prevent disasters. In order to prevent designers from making the same mistakes and find out how to avoid mistakes, I visited seven domestic output service centers.

Inexperienced damage

Production managers such as Adage Graphics Jon Pennington and others I have spoken to pointed out that those new generation publishers who have just used imaging software for Windows are often inexperienced. Not surprisingly, Pennington has more problems with Windows files than Mac. But designers and output centers still have to fight for these familiar problems. Griswold said, "Like other industries, novices will experience the mistakes that old employees have already experienced."

Another change that makes the output center sad is the increasing use of color inkjet printers. Before inkjet printers, many designers mistakenly relied on black and white laser printer proofing to verify the final output; after the application of color printers, the confusion became more serious. Hugo Bonilla, a prepress manager who works at Chantilly Printing & Graphics, said that some guests rejected his Matchprint proofs because the colors did not match the prints they brought.

Because inkjet printers can disguise a large number of crimes, such as low resolution or RGB images. Furthermore, they can print a wider color gamut than four-color prints, so inkjet colors often look more vivid or more saturated than the final print.

Similarly, the web design experience has changed the expectations of many designers for their prints. Like inkjet printers, computer displays are less sensitive to resolution differences and can display more colors than offset printing. Once the designer sees the various pictures on the webpage, they want to apply these pictures to the printed matter. The result is that you enter GIF images that guests want to reuse in their brochures, web page image files are in trouble, and other output nightmares.

Font: It is still the number one cause of error. Of course, it is not surprising. The first word of every pre-press operator's comment on the designer's error is the font. Since the creation of electronic publishing, designers have forgotten to transmit the necessary fonts. But mistakes are much more than missing fonts: designers often send wrong fonts, or changed fonts, or some other fonts that cannot be used.

For example, some Bonilla advertisers occasionally use Macromedia Fontographer software to modify fonts. Although they sent new and modified fonts, Bonilla said that Adobe Type Manager Deluxe often cannot recognize it as a valid font file. Then it needs to do font replacement, sometimes it can be replaced by the approximate corresponding font of the modified font, sometimes it can only be replaced by the Courier font. Because the modified font is generally used as a title, Bonilla advises its guests to set the title in the illustration software, then convert the font to a path, and then introduce it into the typesetting software. In this way, the font becomes a vector artifact, and the font file is no longer needed.
