3D printing Clean Touch: keeps you away from bacteria

Do you ever get annoyed by the constant need to press buttons in public spaces—like elevators, doorbells, or ATMs—knowing they're probably full of germs and bacteria? If that’s something that bothers you, then you’ll love Zach Friedli’s innovative solution: "Clean Touch." This clever little device, which Zach spent two years designing and perfecting, is a game-changer when it comes to keeping your hands clean in high-touch environments. The product is simple but smart. It's a 3D-printed plastic sheet with a round hole at the top, covered by a flexible antibacterial film. When you need to press a button, simply insert your finger into the hole, creating a barrier between your skin and the surface. After you’re done, just pull your hand out without touching anything contaminated. Once home, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for added safety. Zach didn’t come up with this idea overnight. He started by sketching and manually modifying the design before working with an engineer to create a digital model using SolidWorks. The file was then converted to .STL format and sent to WhiteClouds, a professional 3D printing service, to bring the concept to life. The result is a multi-material 3D print using a Stratasys Connex 500 printer, which can handle both rigid and flexible materials—an essential part of the design. “Printing with WhiteClouds made things much easier,” Zach explains. “They could handle both the hard plastic and the soft, flexible film I needed. Their printers were able to capture all the details I designed, which was crucial for the prototype.” One of the biggest advantages of 3D printing for Zach was the ability to quickly produce functional prototypes. “I could test the first version, make changes, and send it back within days,” he says. “I’m constantly improving the design, and that fast iteration process has been key to getting everything right.” Beyond functionality, Zach also values how the final product looks. “I wanted it to not only work well but also look good in photos, especially for our Kickstarter campaign,” he adds. “Aesthetics play a big role in attracting backers.” Currently, Zach is running a Kickstarter campaign to raise $50,000 for final development, testing, and manufacturing. Backers can pledge as little as $12 to get their own "Clean Touch" device. With its practical design and focus on hygiene, this invention could soon become a must-have for anyone who wants to stay germ-free in public spaces.
