The Future of Digital Proofing (II)

Fourth, color management is the key role of color management is to achieve different color space between different devices, so as to ensure that the same picture from the input, display and output as consistent as possible. The printing industry particularly emphasizes that the final copy should be in harmony with the original color. For those who work in color proofing, special attention is paid to the fact that digital proofs must be consistent with the color of printed products. At present, digital proofing mostly uses inkjet printers. However, since the color gamut of the used color ink is much larger than the color gamut of the color ink used in the printing machine, the color of printed products is often not able to catch the color of digital proofs. This is also the printing factory. One reason for not accepting digital proofing. Here we must pay attention to the difference between digital "printing" and digital "proofing". There are many kinds of color printing equipment on the market, but not all of them are applicable to prepress proofing. Whether or not there is color management is the difference. Color "print" and color "proof" signs. Usually "printing" without color management, focusing on getting bright and colorful colors; and pre-printing "proof" emphasizes the need to have a color management system, so that we can make proofs and print products consistent color.
It is not easy to achieve this color consistency. First, manufacturers must provide a good color management system. Second, users must use color management software provided by manufacturers. The user should use a spectrophotometer to establish a color profile file (PROFILE) that expresses the color reproduction of the device on its own output device, compare it with the standard PROFILE provided by the manufacturer when the device is shipped, find out the difference, and perform color correction; Then, through device-independent CIELAB color space, color conversion of different devices' own color space is performed during color transmission. If the user can set up the PROFILE of the device through a spectrophotometer, then using the existing functions provided by the CMS, the color consistency can be guaranteed. In order to establish PROFILE, the user must also regularly calibrate the equipment, ensure that the equipment is always in a normal state, and stabilize the environment and paper and ink characteristics of the printing. These undoubtedly greatly increase the complexity of achieving CMS, for China's printing plants, at least for the time being it is difficult to achieve.
Some digital proofing system development companies, such as Wachcom's LIGHT BRIDGE color proofing system, use a “fool camera” approach. The task of creating a PROFILE by the user is completed by the factory before delivery, freeing the user. Just press the manufacturer's request, select the specified proofing equipment, paper, ink, and then "buttons" to achieve color management. Of course, similar to the fool-type camera, the scope of use of such a digital proofing system is also limited. It is limited to the use of prescribed proofing equipment, ink, and paper, and the quality of proofs can only be matched under the specified conditions.
In any case, color management is indispensable, and it is a guarantee of achieving color matching.
V. Two Applications of Digital Color Proofing In recent years, digital color prepress proofing has become a hot topic. The adopted technology and print format are not afraid of expansion. They have already surpassed the previous KODAK APPROVAL thermal transfer proofing machine. Angel's IRIS inkjet proofer and 3M's RAINBOW sublimation product are the main proofing levels. With the development of CTP technology, digital color pre-press proofing has become an indispensable role. Numerous manufacturers have successively developed and introduced numerous new products. These are enough to show that digital proofing is entering an industrial practical stage.
1、Promote new type of "same-like" proofing product (1) Epson Epson uses its unique piezoelectric inkjet technology to produce a series of inkjet printers, such as STYLUS 1520K, 3000, 5000 and STYLUS PHOTO EX, etc. Upper dominance. Some software developers have used Epson inkjet printers to develop their own digital color proofing systems. Epson itself has also collaborated with famous companies such as EFI and DuPont to develop an interesting CROMALIN DESIGNER PROOF digital color proofing system. It is said that it can obtain better proofs than the sublimation proofing device, and the price is less than 9,000 U.S. dollars. It also stirred up other companies to compete for new products.
(2) BIRMY GRAPHICS
BIRMY GRAPHICS' color proofing system, which is similar to Epson's digital proofing, is similar to Epson's digital proofing, and its price is less than 1,000 US dollars. BIRMY, once known for high-resolution RIP manufacturers, has now become a technological innovation force for the development and production of low-cost proofing systems. This low-price proofing system is called PRESSPROOF and consists of the following three parts: First, BIRMY's POWERRIP (sold separately for US$150), and the BIRMY proofing system can run under WINDOWS 95, 98, and NT on a MAC or PC. Second, Epson proofing machine, almost any Epson desktop printer (including STYLUS 800, 3000 and 5000, etc.) can be used, and the hot product for the new A3 size, 6 color PHOTO EX, can make a total bleeding at 1440DPI * 720DPI , tabloid size sample proofs. The aircraft is expected to sell for $450 in the United States. Third, like the offset paper for offset printing, BIRMY now offers commercial paper called PRESSPROOF, which is priced at $1 each.
