Wood carving collection

Wood carving is a variety of artworks and practical handicrafts carved from various precious woods. The origin of woodcarving art in China is very early, about the time of primitive society. For example, the woodcarving fish unearthed in the Hemudu Cultural Relics Site in Yuyao, Zhejiang Province, has a round pattern with different sizes and vivid images. It is more than 7,000 years old and is the earliest object of woodcarving crafts in China.

In the Qin and Han Dynasties, the wood carvings of Shicai appeared, according to the content and image requirements, or carved or painted, to achieve the harmony of texture and color. The colorful carved wooden barrel unearthed in the Yunmeng Han tomb in Hubei is the perfect combination of painting and carving art.

During the Tang and Song Dynasties, the carving technique was more mature. From the view of the woodcarving Buddha statue found in the Yunnan Temple Tower built during the Jianning Period of the Song Dynasty, its shape was concise, the knife method was skilled and smooth, and the lines were clear and bright. In the Ming Dynasty, engraving formed a more perfect system, such as the provincial key cultural relics protection unit “Zheyutang” in Dongyang, Zhejiang. The structure of the hall is reasonable and exquisite, with fine carvings and carved beams. During this period, the atmosphere of appreciation and collection of literary and antique works was flourishing, and the theme of woodcarving crafts was expanded accordingly. On the wooden utensils of daily necessities, the utensils of the textbooks were decorated with carvings, and the woodcarving craftsmanship developed to the art. . In the Qing Dynasty, the woodcarvings were carried forward on the basis of predecessors. The famous masters from all over the world, the Dongyang eucalyptus carvings in Zhejiang, the Chengde wood carvings in Hebei, and the Shanghai red wood carvings... have become treasures of collectors' favorite antiques.

Christie's, the world-famous antique auction house, held an auction of Chinese porcelain, jade and woodcarving crafts in New York on November 29, 1990. A Song Dynasty woodcarving Guanyin was sold at the highest price of the auction, which was $440,000. The Guanyin is more than 1 meter tall, with a peaceful appearance and fine carvings. It is a rare art. The value of wood carving is not only the age and the wood factor, but the most important thing is to look at the level of craftsmanship.
