Hepatitis C virus cultivation method

Researchers at the Washington Medical College have designed a novel virus culture system, thus opening a new path for hepatitis C virus research. This culture system can replicate viruses isolated from patients in non-transformed liver cells.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection affects the health of approximately 170 million people worldwide. HCV can cause hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Studying the replication of HCV in liver cells is hampered by the lack of an appropriate virus culture system. Some systems enable viruses to infect cells but not delay duplication and formation of hardness, while others rely on permissive virus derivatives. Therefore, there has been a lack of a system that can maintain the continuous replication of the virus.

Nelson Fausto of the University of Washington School of Medicine solved this problem by using a human embryonic liver cell embryo system. Using this system, the team demonstrated that it can maintain the replication and assembly of virus particles for at least two months, and these virus particles can interfere with new cells.
